Saint Laurent is a brand famous for its innovative approach to fashion. It designs clothing and accessories that consistently fit into the canons. As one of the most recognizable and respected fashion houses in the world, it is involved in many international events, as it turns out, not only in the area of fashion itself. A few days ago, the brand announced a new venture in the field of film production – Saint Laurent Productions.

Saint Laurent Productions will debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. He will be appearing with his first production, Pedro Almodovar’s short film “Strange Way of Life,” starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal. With its debut, Saint Laurent also proudly becomes the first luxury brand to include full-fledged film production among its activities. Is this the right direction for a clothing company? Should Saint Laurent look beyond its industry?
Collaboration with a virtuoso of Spanish cinema
Pedro Almodóvar is an undoubted giant in the field of cinema, not only in Spain but throughout the world. Spanish director, screenwriter and film producer, boasts an impressive directorial portfolio, including over 20 feature films, as well as numerous short films and documentaries.
Almodóvar’s films are known for their bold approach to social, cultural and political themes. They are also loved for their unique aesthetic that combines elements melodrama, comedy, horror and surrealism. In his films, the director presents the audience an insightful look at issues of identity, sexuality and interpersonal relationships. That is why the productions with his name are highly appreciated by critics and audiences around the world. Many of them have become cult works of cinema.
Anthony Vaccarello steers the brand towards innovation
Vaccarello has been creative director of Saint Laurent since 2016. Under his leadership, the brand has seen significant growth in profits. In 2022, turnover reached €3.3 billion, up 33% on the previous year.
It is widely believed that as one of the most promising designers of the young generation. He secured this place by distinguishing himself with a minimalistic yet avant-garde approach to fashion. He is known for his love of combining contrasting elements, such as leather, lace and tulle.
It has been officially confirmed that Vaccarello will be working on all the costumes for Saint Laurent Productions’ films. It is an extremely responsible task, as costumes have always played a huge role in Almodóvar’s work. “I want to work with all the great film talents who have inspired me over the years and give them space,” explains the Saint Laurent creative director.

Is this just the beginning for Saint Laurent Productions?
It also turns out that the production of “Strange Way of Life” is not Almodóvar’s first interaction with an exclusive fashion house. Well, in 2019, the brand, through its production company, financially supported the production of the cult film “Pain and Glory”. The film was nominated for two Oscars and won the award for Best Actor (Antonio Banderas) at the Cannes Film Festival.
Certainly Saint Laurent Productions’ plans go much further. We already know that in the future we can expect more productions from acclaimed directors David Cronenberg and Paolo Sorrentino. Right behind them are Abel Ferrara, Wong Kar Wai, Jim Jarmusch and Gaspar Noé.
